Christmas card photo ideas for couples

A good couple Christmas card is simple: the two of you, looking like yourselves, in a scene that says the season. You don't need a photographer. A phone on a timer and soft light are enough for most of these ideas, and one of them doesn't need a photoshoot at all.

  1. By the tree with the lights on

The classic: the two of you in front of the tree, warm lights behind you.

How to do it: Shoot at dusk so the room still has some daylight, and prop the phone on a stack of books with the timer on.

  2. Matching sweaters

Matching or coordinated sweaters make the card festive without much effort.

How to do it: Coordinate colors rather than match exactly if you want it to look less posed.

  3. With the dog or cat

Pets often steal the card, and that's fine.

How to do it: Hold a treat right above the camera so your pet looks up.

  4. A winter walk

Coats, scarves and a cold, bright day outside.

How to do it: Shoot in the late afternoon, when the light is soft.

  5. A vintage 1950s card

The two of you as a festive 1950s holiday illustration: a snowy window, twinkling lights, cozy sweaters.

How to do it: On Twofold, pick the vintage holiday card style and add one photo of each of you. Paint your holiday card

  6. A year-in-review collage

Four or six small photos from the year: a trip, a move, a new pet.

How to do it: Most card printing sites have collage templates.

  7. The funny one

Tangled in lights, buried in wrapping paper or holding the burnt cookies.

How to do it: Plan the joke but keep it kind; everyone in the photo should be in on it.

  8. Order early

Printed cards take time to make and to mail.

How to do it: Check your print shop's order deadlines and your postal service's holiday mailing dates.

You two, painted. Add one photo of each of you, pick a style and get one portrait of you together, in full resolution.
